Cathedrals

A collection of Cathedrals in Mixed Media

About the Collection.

A series of works of Cathedrals in various media.

York Minster

(Watercolour)

The graceful and intricate west front is always lovely to see, even though it is obscured by the London plane tree in front of it. I confess to simply making the tree smaller in order to see the front more clearly.

Radcliffe Camera, Oxford

(Pen and wash)

This unforgettable Nel-classical building, designed by James Gibbs, is a charming asset to the university’s architectural glories.

St Pauls Cathedral

(Watercolour)

The result of another day trip to London with sketchbook in bag, this is one of those rare occasions when things turn out right. The sketch was copied with brush only when I got home.

Whalley Abbey Gatehouse

(Watercolour)

Towneley Hall, Burneley. Formerly property of the Towneley family, now managed by Burnley Borough Council, this Elizabethan mansion (reflected in the lake in front of it) looks over its wide parkland, which is now open for the public to enjoy.

Colne from the Lenches

(Oil Paint)

A painting of my home town. One of those lucky chances of being in right place at the right time, with the weather and my location, walking home over the moors coinciding. My wife likens it to San Gimignano in Italy with its many towers and this picture shows why.

St. Mary’s Church, Scarborough

(Watercolour)

Still a very attractive and roomy church overlooking the old town and harbour. This ruined endbears witness to when it was used as a gun battery by the Roundheads besieging the nearby castle.

Packhorse Bridge, Barrowford

(Oil Paint)

This graceful span has a tranquility that is easy to miss. It is just along from the busy, more modern, bridge built to carry traffic on the road to Gisburn.

Hebden Bridge

(Oil Paint)

I painted this picture before realising that I was depicting a disaster waiting to happen. The peat moors above, managed only for grouse shooting will, instead of holding the increased rainfall generated by global warming, release it and flood the town.

Bolton Abbey

(Watercolour)

A view across the river Wharfe. Not much remains of the abbey demolished by Henry VIII but it is now a rewarding attraction to locals and tourists alike.
